وجّه الصحفي والناشط الحقوقي الإرتري حسين حب الدين زمزمي انتقادات حادة لما وصفه بحالة الصمت المتكررة والمخيبة تجاه ملف المعتقلين الإرتريين خلال أعمال منتدى المنظمات غير الحكومية المسبق للدورة العادية السابعة والثمانين للجنة الأفريقية لحقوق الإنسان والشعوب المنعقد في بانجول خلال الفترة من 7 إلى 9 مايو 2026 والذي يسبق أعمال الدورة الرسمية للجنة الأفريقية المقررة بين 11 و20 مايو 2026 ، وقال زمزمي إن استمرار تجاهل واحدة من أقدم وأقسى المآسي الإنسانية في القارة الأفريقية يطرح تساؤلات عميقة حول مصداقية المؤسسات والمنظمات التي ترفع شعارات العدالة وحقوق الإنسان بينما يظل آلاف المعتقلين الإرتريين خارج دائرة الاهتمام والتحرك الجاد.

وأضاف أن الإرتريين باتوا يشاهدون في كل دورة نفس العبارات الدبلوماسية والبيانات المتكررة دون أن ينعكس ذلك على حياة الضحايا أو مصير المختفين داخل السجون الإريترية منذ سنوات طويلة

وأشار إلى أن ما يحدث في إرتريا لم يعد مجرد تجاوزات منفصلة بل أصبح نظامًا متكاملًا يقوم على القمع والإخفاء القسري وتدمير أي مساحة مستقلة للتعبير أو العمل المدني حيث تحولت حرية الصحافة والرأي إلى تهم خطيرة يدفع أصحابها أعمارهم داخل المعتقلات

وأكد زمزمي أن آلاف الأسر الإريترية لا تزال تعيش في حالة انتظار مفتوح دون معرفة مصير أبنائها أو أماكن احتجازهم أو حتى ما إذا كانوا على قيد الحياة معتبرًا أن هذا الصمت الطويل لم يعد مجرد تقصير سياسي بل فشل أخلاقي وإنساني مستمر

ويُعرف زمزمي باهتمامه المتواصل بقضايا حقوق الإنسان وحرية التعبير في إرتريا ومناطق أخرى حول العالم حيث يشارك في عدد من المنتديات والفعاليات الدولية المعنية بالعدالة وحقوق الإنسان غير أنه كثيرًا ما يعبّر عن استيائه من غياب الإرادة الحقيقية لحسم العديد من القضايا الإنسانية واستمرار ثقافة الإفلات من العقاب بحق منتهكي حقوق الإنسان

كما يرى أن الاكتفاء بالبيانات والخطابات دون إجراءات فعلية جعل كثيرًا من الأنظمة القمعية تشعر بالأمان السياسي وأتاح استمرار الانتهاكات لعقود دون مساءلة حقيقية

وأضاف أن القضية الإريترية أصبحت مثالًا مؤلمًا على هذا العجز الدولي حيث يختفي المعتقلون داخل السجون لسنوات طويلة بينما يستمر العالم في عقد الاجتماعات وإصدار البيانات دون خطوات قادرة على حماية الضحايا أو الضغط الجاد من أجل العدالة

ودعا زمزمي اللجنة الأفريقية والمنظمات المشاركة إلى التعامل مع ملف المعتقلين الإرتريين باعتباره قضية إنسانية عاجلة لا تحتمل المزيد من التأجيل أو الصمت مطالبًا بوضعها ضمن أولويات العمل الحقوقي الأفريقي بصورة واضحة ومستمرة

وختم بالقول إن التاريخ لن يتذكر عدد الكلمات التي قيلت داخل القاعات بل سيتذكر من امتلك الشجاعة للوقوف مع الضحايا حين اختار الآخرون الصمت وإن القارة الأفريقية لا يمكنها الحديث عن مستقبل قائم على الكرامة والعدالة بينما يستمر هذا الألم الإنساني دون مسائلة حقيقية

Eritrean journalist and human rights advocate Hussein Habuddin Zamzame has strongly criticised what he described as the persistent and deeply disappointing silence surrounding the plight of Eritrean detainees during the NGO Forum preceding the 87th Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights held in Banjul from 7 to 9 May 2026 ahead of the Commission’s official session scheduled to take place in Kololo Banjul from 11 to 20 May 2026
Zamzame stated that the continued marginalisation of one of Africa’s longest standing human rights crises raises serious and painful questions about the credibility of institutions and organisations that consistently champion justice human dignity and fundamental freedoms while thousands of Eritrean prisoners remain abandoned beyond the reach of meaningful international attention
He noted that Eritreans continue to witness the repetition of the same diplomatic language and ceremonial commitments during every session while the suffering of political prisoners journalists activists students religious leaders and ordinary citizens remains largely absent from decisive regional engagement despite decades of arbitrary detention enforced disappearances and systematic repression
According to Zamzame the situation in Eritrea can no longer be described as a series of isolated abuses but rather as an entrenched system founded on fear silence and the deliberate dismantling of civic life where independent journalism freedom of expression and civil society are treated as existential threats instead of universally protected rights
He further emphasised that countless Eritrean families have endured years of uncertainty and anguish without access to any information regarding the fate health conditions or whereabouts of their loved ones describing the prolonged silence surrounding their suffering as a profound moral failure within both regional and international human rights mechanisms
Widely recognised for his advocacy on behalf of Eritrean prisoners and victims of repression Zamzame has consistently used his platform to defend freedom of expression and highlight the human cost of authoritarian rule in Eritrea while also engaging in broader international discussions concerning justice accountability and human rights protection across different regions of the world
Despite participating in numerous international forums and human rights gatherings he has repeatedly expressed frustration over what he sees as the absence of genuine political will in addressing long standing human rights violations and the continued culture of impunity enjoyed by perpetrators of abuse
Zamzame argued that the Eritrean case has become a painful symbol of how prolonged silence diplomatic hesitation and institutional inaction can gradually normalise oppression allowing thousands of detainees to disappear into prisons for decades without accountability transparency or meaningful external pressure
He called on the African Commission and participating organisations to move beyond symbolic declarations and confront the Eritrean crisis with seriousness consistency and moral clarity by placing the issue of detainees and enforced disappearances at the centre of African human rights discussions
He concluded by stating that history will not remember the number of speeches delivered inside conference halls but will remember those who chose to stand beside the victims when silence was easier than confronting injustice adding that Africa cannot credibly speak of a future founded on rights dignity and development while such suffering continues without accountability
